Some New Technological Perspectives on Bakun Pottery:
A Study of Three Sites in Darab, Fars, Iran
Irene Kritikopoulos
MSc. University College London
Abstract:
This study focuses on the technological variation between the sites of Tal-i-Siah, Tal-i-Skau, and Tal-i-Regi in
the county of Darab. The samples analyzed are part of the Stein collection at the British Museum, from Sir
Aurel Stein’s expedition to the region of Fars in South-western Iran. By using an integrated approach of
analysis with petrography, SEM-EDX, and XRF to differentiate chemical and compositional groups, one can
discover data on the cultural interaction and the transfer of information with regards to fine-ware pottery
production in the Chalcolithic. This approach shows that there was a high level of uniformity in the output of
ceramics at these sites, being homogenous and highly fired (850C to 1050C). Although only the waster
samples could be securely provenanced in this study, the results reveal that Darab county exhibited a large
degree of mobility of fine-ware Bakun ceramics during the 5th and 4th Millennium BC and a high level of
pottery specialization.
